We ask that you follow some basic guidelines/rules while you are at the Capitol so that we can keep this as organized and consistent as possible.
- Please dress modestly in a plain black t-shirt and jeans. Also, please do not wear anything that can be seen as political (i.e. buttons, pins, shirts, hats, etc.).
- Come to the capitol with the sign of the victim you’re representing hanging around your neck with a ribbon or string, or have it safety-pinned to your shirt.
- You will have to provide your own transportation to the Capitol. There are links to Uber and Lyft on our website that you are able to use.
- You are required to bring a buddy with you. This way you can take shifts sitting in the Capitol and you’ll have a friend to talk to. This is also for safety purposes. Keep in mind you will only be representing one victim for the day and you will only have one sign.
- If someone in the capitol approaches you and asks about what you are doing/why you are doing it, only answer with information about the victim you are representing, or by telling them that we are trying to keep this issue relevant.
- We strongly encourage you to do research on the victim that you are representing beforehand so you know who they were and so you can talk about them. We have done some basic and simplistic research for your convenience. Doing this will also give you more of a connection to the victim.
- Please do not use your phone while you are there. You are representing a cause and a generation. If you are on your phone the whole time, you seem bored and less approachable. We know it will get long and boring sitting there for 7 hours but please do not be on your phone the whole time. Instead, bring a book or your homework to keep yourself busy.
- Please be respectful while you are in the Capitol.
- Along with being respectful, we ask you to be quiet and nondisruptive. Don’t draw attention to yourself, let people’s attention come to you. And we ask that you do not speak unless spoken to. Let this be a silent memorial that people will see and question but not feel like it’s being forced upon them. We would like to seen as a benign existence that helps them remember, not a belligerent one that needs to be removed.
- Please sit in the lobby of the capitol. Always be in sight of the front doors and be on the ground floor. We want people to see you as they walk in and out. Also, please don’t wander the capitol, it is supposed to be big and have extravagant architecture, so it is easy to get lost.
- Finally, we ask that you take an hour for lunch between the times of 12:30 and 1:30. We request that every participant does this for consistency purposes. Although the times are somewhat flexible, we ask that you try to keep to this schedule as best as possible. We recommend that you bring snacks and/or a lunch to have while you are at the capitol if you think you’ll get hungry outside of this time.
